O Israelites, fight not against the Lord, the God of your fathers, for you cannot prosper. But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come around them from behind, so his troops were before Judah and the ambush behind. When Judah looked, behold, the battle was before and behind; and they cried to the Lord, and the priests blew the trumpets. Then the men of Judah gave a shout; and as they shouted, God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. And the Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands. And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter, so there fell of Israel 500,000 chosen men. Thus the Israelites were brought low at that time, and the people of Judah prevailed because they relied upon the Lord, the God of their fathers. And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took some cities from him, Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephraim (Ephron), with their towns. Jeroboam did not recover strength again in the days of Abijah. And the Lord smote him and he died.

Tengan en cuenta, pues, que al frente de nosotros están Dios y sus sacerdotes, y que están listas las trompetas para dar el toque de guerra contra ustedes. Por consiguiente, israelitas, no peleen contra el Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados, porque no vencerán.» Jeroboam había ordenado que sus tropas de retaguardia dieran un rodeo y atacaran por detrás, de modo que el grueso del ejército de Jeroboam quedó frente al de Judá, mientras que la retaguardia atacaba por detrás. Cuando los de Judá miraron hacia atrás, se dieron cuenta de que los atacaban por el frente y por detrás. Entonces invocaron al Señor, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas. Y cuando los de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra, Dios derrotó a Jeroboam y a todo Israel frente a Abiam y Judá. Los israelitas huyeron de los de Judá, porque Dios los entregó en manos de éstos. Abiam y su gente les hicieron una gran matanza, en la que cayeron quinientos mil soldados escogidos de Israel. Así los israelitas fueron humillados en aquel tiempo, mientras que los de Judá se mostraron fuertes, porque se apoyaron en el Señor, Dios de sus antepasados. Abiam persiguió a Jeroboam y le arrebató las ciudades de Betel, Jesaná y Efraín con sus respectivas aldeas. Jeroboam no pudo recuperar su poderío mientras vivió Abiam. Finalmente el Señor lo hirió, y Jeroboam murió.
